Prevention & Getting Started

What should I expect at my first dental appointment?

Whether it's been a while since your last check-up or you're visiting a new practice for the first time, here's a friendly walkthrough of what usually happens.

1. A warm welcome and some paperwork

You'll typically fill in a short medical and dental history form (paper or digital) so the dentist understands your general health background.

2. A conversation first

Before any hands-on examination, most dentists like to talk with you about any concerns, symptoms, or goals you have — this is a good time to mention nervousness too.

3. A full examination

This usually includes checking your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues, and may include X-rays if it's your first visit or it's been a while, to get a complete picture.

4. A clean, if needed

Many first visits include a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar buildup, leaving your teeth feeling fresh.

5. A personalized plan

If any treatment is recommended, your dentist should explain what it is, why it's suggested, roughly what it costs, and answer any questions — with no pressure to decide on the spot.

How long does it take?

A first appointment is often a little longer than a routine check-up, typically 30–60 minutes, to allow time for a thorough assessment.

Feeling nervous?

It's completely normal. Let the team know beforehand — many practices offer extra time, clear explanations, and pacing to help nervous patients feel comfortable.
